Witney vs South Berkshire
After a long for a 16:30 start at Witney skipper Ryan gave a steering team talk. We are only 12 was the cry, a solid warm up and the game was underway, South Berkshire moving the ball and creating leads from the forwards Aaron, Elliott and Gareth causing the Witney defence all sorts of trouble. The midfield battle for both teams was a hotly contested battle with never team giving much away. A great run from Gareth led to a short corner up step up Kav for a well practiced short routine unfortunately Witney’s number 1 run closed down the flick. A reward and take to this time Kav flicking just wide of the top corner.
Plenty of end to end play continued for the first half with Witney being awarded a short which they then managed to bundle in after the ball bounced of Bears shins 1-0 to Witney.
South not being disheartened continued to work the simple 1-2s and channel runs resulting in a great pass from Elliot to Richie on the P-Spot for an easy goal but it wasn’t to be a miss hit resulting in a easy save the follow up even worse. DOTD was secured. The midfield and fowards continued with the excellent play making which paid off with a well worked goal from Aaron. 1-1 at half time and all to play for.
The 2nd half saw much of the same battles around the pitch with Ollie (the charming) having the game of his life and securing the man of the match vote. With tiring legs Witney started to apply pressure and were awarded a number of shorts which were dully dealt with my Tom (The Wall) Nance, further pressure from Witney saw a save from Tom and a scramble to clear Tom’s pads apparently deemed to be dangerous by the umpire short awarded to Witney a well dispatched drag to the left Post 2-1 Witney. Not disheartened South showed determination and grit and still had chances one of note was a break away from Elliott having managed to break from midfield and going 1-1 with the keeper everyone was expecting to hear the sound of the back board but it wasn’t to be.
As the legs of South tired more due to limited numbers Isaac decided a 2 min rest was needed. Witney using the subs well to further tire out South eventually leading to a misplaced pass from Kav to there forward resulting in a 3rd goal for Witney. The final whistle blew and though South had not won the game the play and movement were the best we’ve done all season (training must be paying off) on to next week with a chance to gain retribution to a well organised Abingdon and show them the hockey South truly can play.
